چکیده

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my advisor Robert Krasny, without whom this thesis would never have been possible. The highest standard he always sets for himself has been inspiring me over all these years. Beside the knowledge he has taught me, I am particularly grateful for his enormous patience and encouragement during many periods when no progress in was made. I look forward to working with him in the future. I would also like to thank Professor Smadar Karni for being my second thesis reader, and Professor Werner Dahm and Professor Sijue Wu for agreeing to sit on my thesis committee. I am grateful to Professor August Evrard for letting me use their computer cluster to perform the computations. The staff in the graduate office of mathematics has been of tremendous help in non-academic affairs and I appreciate their assistance. I have been fortunate to know some good friends in Ann Arbor. I am appreciative to their friendship and hope that it will continue. Last, I would like to thank my family for their emotional support during this seemingly unending project.

Adaptive Panel Representation for 3D Vortex Ring Motion and Instability

A hierarchical panel method for representing vortex sheet surface motion in 3D flow is presented. Unlike previously employed filament methods, each panel is a leaf of the tree, so it can be subdivided locally, which allows an efficient adaptive point insertion. In addition, we developed curvature-based insertion criteria which allow to localize point insertion to the most complicated curved reg...

‎Incompressible ‎smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations on free surface flows

‎The water wave generation by wave paddle and a freely falling rigid body are examined by using an Incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (ISPH)‎. ‎In the current ISPH method‎, ‎the pressure was evaluated by solving pressure Poisson equation using a semi-implicit algorithm based on the projection scheme and the source term of pressure Poisson equation contains both of divergence free ve...

A Particle Method and Adaptive Treecodefor Vortex Sheet Motion inThree-Dimensional Flow

A particle method is presented for computing vortex sheet motion in three-dimensional flow. The particles representing the sheet are advected by a regularized Biot– Savart integral in which the exact singular kernel is replaced by the Rosenhead– Moore kernel. New particles are inserted to maintain resolution as the sheet rolls up. The particle velocities are evaluated by an adaptive treecode al...

A New Technique for the Calculation of Colliding Vortex Rings

The present study involves a novel computational technique, regarding simultaneous use of the pseudo particle method, Poisson integral method and a special-purpose computer originally designed for molecular dynamics simulations (MDGRAPE-3). In the present calculations, the dynamics of two colliding vortex rings have been studied using the vortex method. The present acceleration technique allows...

Deflection of an elliptically loaded vortex sheet by a flat plate

We investigate the behavior of vortex flows in the presence of obstacles using numerical simulations. Specifically, we simulate the evolution of an elliptically loaded vortex sheet in the presence of a stationary flat plate in its path. The plate is represented by a number of point vortices whose strength is such that they cancel the normal fluid velocity on the plate. The sheet is approximated...
